History

1997

The Pacific Island Body-Builders Association was founded by Miss Esther Tofilau, who envisaged PIBBA as an organisation that would aim to raise the level of self esteem and promote all Maori and Pacific Island Body-Builders within Aotearoa and abroad.

From these humble beginnings and with community support, a Mr LeTanoa Body-Building Competition was held and proved successful. This gave Ms. Tofilau the confidence to organise the 1st Pacific Island Body-Building Championship, held in Manukau City with competitors from as far a field as Wellington.

1998

PIBBA was extended an invitation from Mr Peter Hardwick and the INBA to take a Pacific Island Team to the INBA Natural Universe @ Las Vegas, USA and Natural Olympia @ Greece. Ms. Tofilau also had the privilege to judge at these international body-building events. The selected team were all place-getters and proved to be winners at these World Body-Building Championships.

OLYMPIA

1999

PIBBA once again participated at the INBA Natural Universe @ Texas and Natural Olympia @ Los Angeles. Once again the members selected were place-getters and winners at both events.

PIBBA has gained recognition and experience at an international level since formed. We acknowledge and appreciate the support given by the INBA and Mr Hardwick towards PIBBA and its members.

Moving into the new millennium

2000

PIBBA's 4th Championship was sanctioned under the NZFBB umbrella for the very first time (see below).
It proved to be very popular and successful.

Guest Poser Mr Sonny Schmidt (the IFBB 1995 Master Mr Olympia and the first Samoan and Pacific Islander to receive his pro-card) graced the stage and showed us all why he is the best Pacific Islander in body-building.

We were also fortunate to have David (the terminator) Tua as a special guest to watch the great Sonny Schmidt in action.

The New Zealand Federation of Body-Builders

Doors of opportunity started to open for PIBBA, with Ms. Tofilau being elected onto the Executive Committee of the NZFBB, through the guidance of former NZFBB president, Mr Philip Hope. We found this a great opportunity to enhance the profile of PIBBA and would like to thank Philip and Siobhan for their support.

2001

The 6th Pacific Island Body-Building Championship

Auckland Girls Grammer School has awesome stage facilities and should seat everyone comfortably for a thrilling evening of competition and entertainment.

We appreciate the support of the Manukau City Council who have been so supportive over the years. The majority of our members are from the South Auckland area. Moving the PIBBA championship to Central Auckland is only a short term measure, as in the future we look to run our shows at the new multi-purpose, Pacific Events Centre

MIND BODY and SOUL
